Someone answer me this. Goths used to appreciate all things old - TopicsExpress

Someone answer me this. Goths used to appreciate all things old and unusual, they had an interest in older eras, literature, art and good taste in clothes... when did that become party all night, get high and dress trashy? Also I have read and learned about the subculture because I enjoy studying history and what many people tend to ignore and forget is that there are two forms of Gothic from two different times, Old and Modern, Old Goth was revived in 1764 with Horac Walpole and Modern Goth started in the 1970s-1980s when several bands were labeled gothic, the followers of those bands started Modern Goth but Old Goth was already around, just not that popular, therefore leading to two separate subgenres of the culture that merged together. The birth of Modern Goth brought the popularity of it. As a whole the subculture is music, history, art, literature, architectural, fashion, abnormality, a different way of seeing, an appreciation for things dark and strange and somewhere down the line BDSM and fetish became a part of it. without understanding it all it is meaningless... Many people read Lovecraft and are not Goth, many people listen to Sisters of Mercy and are not Goth, being Goth is more than the band you listen to or the brand you shop by. If it sounds like this is an essay that is because it is... I have been writing one on alternative subcultures for several years. I believe in what the subculture used to represent and be, not what it is today. No one who can sit here and set rules for what Goth is or isnt, everyone has different opinions of it, I simply state mine in a factual seeing. ...I am even an outcast among the strange...
