Someone asked: Does Deepti compete with you as well? …Ah! Deepti and I, once we had taken the decision to turn to entrepreneurship, decided that we need to create a backup – just in case things do not go right. So we decide, in case things do not move the way they should – we would quit India and go to US – do MS or Ph.D., and then start afresh. With this in mind, we planned our GRE, and registered ourselves for a test to be written in Hyderabad. Both of us registered for the same test slot, so that, we could get over with it. We had put in a goal of getting 1500+ (old pattern when it was with 1600), which would then confirm us a place in a good college. The exam completed, I walk out of the center with lot of apprehension – did WE reach our goal or not! I see, Deepti already waiting for me outside – obviously having completed her test a bit earlier. She immediately comes to me and asks how much I had scored. While telling her my score – 1520, I thought she would be happy and jump. The word that came out of her mouth was – SHIT. Stunned - because she is not a girl to use such a strong word (I know!) - I thought she probably messed her test up. Comprehension drawn on me, when she told me her score….She had scored 1510… I just could not resist hugging her there. Does she compete with me – of course! But that is what is great about her – not just does she compete with me AND makes it obvious – she quite often thrashing me as well…and I love her for that. It just adds spice to my life….and pushes both of us to excel. I have seen many good institutions fail because two people come together only to break because of their ego once they succeed (“It happened because of me – what did you do?” problem). I have always openly said that in this department I have been lucky – Deepti, does not believe in divorce :) If one can just learn to compete with ones best friend, in my view, it not just pushes both up the bar – but also makes the bonding stronger…. May we all get great friends – who push us to discover what we are really capable of… Amen.
