Someone asked a question about thinning edges and why do so many - TopicsExpress

Someone asked a question about thinning edges and why do so many women have it. My reply is. The result of thinning or bald edges is a personal story. Some are that way due to stress on the edges from braiding or chemical allergic reactions(color, relaxer, weave glue). Others are struggling with alopecia, hereditary or medical thinning that happens with hormonal changes, medical side effects, aging and deficiency in diets. In some cases the hair will come back in. In addition to my response- Thinning, balding and tricholillomania is a challenge that men and women deal with equally but differently. It will appear as an isolated challenge or combined. Women can camouflage the challenge with scarfs, wigs, weave, a great haircut and a beautiful smile. Men will deal with it by keeping a low haircut or shaving it bald and an incredible smile. I am a licensed cosmetologist and I have alopecia and hereditary thinning hair that started in my crown area, then my edges while I was in my 20s . I saw these conditions present in both my parents and other family members (male and female) that made me understand better what I was experiencing and that it was inevitable. Its natural for most people to want to blame their stylist for braiding their hair too tight, applying a relaxer or a weave improperly. Some times this is the reason, but most time it is an oncoming challenge and a combination issue that poses the reason for hair loss. Most dont receive the proper and supporting information needed to address the challenge, others cant afford the suggested treatments and opt for more affordable solutions like a wig or weave or chose to delay addressing the issue until its most embarassing. Deficiency in diets, side effects in medicines and hormonal changes are big factors in hair loss. Many dont recognize these contributing factors because either they were not educated on all the side effects of their medication/treatment or they dont want to deal with the reality of their medical issues that they need to accept responsibility with. As a licensed and trained cosmetologist I struggled with aligning my professional mission and purpose with my personal image and identity. Not wanting to be disconnected, I became transparent with my inquiring family, friends and clients why I wear weaves. I connect better with my clients who are facing similar challenges and as a professional hairstylist I meet them where they are and develop a plan that we review every few salon visits. When you have questions and concerns about your thinning hair you should discuss them with your stylist, medical doctor, dermatologist and a certified dietician. Because every person struggling with thinning hair is unique and very sensitive with their challenge and it should be addressed individually. Also express any trails and precautions youd like to take with your hair or health with your professional team. My job as licensed cosmetologist and hairstylist is to use products and tools to help keep your hair on your scalp feeling and looking healthy and stylish. You may inbox me or email me to if you have questions or want to request an indivudual consultation at kuumbahairsalon@gmail. Please dont share your personal issues or challenges here. Thank you, Michelle Schofield Stylist/Owner of Kuumba Hair Salon
