Someone asked me about the thickness of edges on Greenland paddles - TopicsExpress

Someone asked me about the thickness of edges on Greenland paddles and here is my short answer: EDGES Sharp edges and tips make paddles quiet in the water. Sharp edges help with sculling rolls. Edges that are too sharp can be hard on the hands and dent easily. The paddle edges I have seen range from 1 to 10 mm in thickness. Edge thickness is not a simple thing to measure. You must also look at the radius of the curve, the thickness of the paddle behind the edge, the material on the edge and the use of the paddle. I work with 2 to 5 mm edges and I coat the edges and tips with marine epoxy to harden them. One of the things I like about epoxy tips is that they are easy to repair by sanding the tip and working more epoxy into it. I have a paddle that I have used hard for the last year surfing and rock gardening and I have repaired the tip twice. It now has a thick, strong layer of epoxy at the top.
