Someone asked me why Hanoi? and it started with a newspaper article several years ago about an ancient turtle in a lake in Hanoi. The turtle was sacred, being part of local legend, and also very sick and over 100 years old. It was suffering from pollution in the lake, but they couldnt catch it to help it. In 2011 a campaign was launched to clean up the lake and save the turtle. The turtle is still there and makes random, albeit rare, appearances. The lake features a Tortoise Tower and a temple with a 550 lb. stuffed turtle caught in the lake in the 1960s. I always thought Id like to visit and here I am! Of course there are many reasons to visit Hanoi; its really lovely, with lots of great colonial architecture and shady parks and lanes, and the food is excellent. The next time you plan a vacation, dont overlook Hanoi!
