Someone called director Steven Soderbergh the best hack director - TopicsExpress

Someone called director Steven Soderbergh the best hack director ever. After seeing this its easy to see why. Heres the scoop. A hardworking Manhattan psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) prescribes Ablixa, a (fictional) new drug, for his new patient Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) who has tried to commit suicide. The experimental medication, however, seems to have side effects that could ruin the lives of Emily and those surrounding her including Jonathan. I like these kinds of movies. It kept me guessing very close to the end. At a certain point I knew what might happen, but I wanted to know how they would pull it off. Some liken it to a Hitchcock mystery/thriller and theyre right. This does start out as an indictment on the psychiatric/pharmaceutical communities, then changes to thriller gear. I loved the way the story unfolded and how Jude began to put the pieces together. Then they add the note regarding Emilys previous shrink (Catherine Zeta Jones), and Judes sinking further into a near helpless situation, and I was really hooked! As in the best of Hitchcock, the viewer wants (needs) to see the innocent guy claw his way out of the web. Now for the directing. Soderbergh isnt a flashy director, but this was efficient. I always thought he had the camera in the right place and he seemed to know how to set up one shot to transition into the next. I also liked the color palette. It was a pretty movie with colors being not too washed out nor over-saturated. The performances were good, as was the editing and music. I had a few minor quibbles, and Im guessing a second viewing would reveal some plot holes, but this had me hook, line and sinker. For those looking for a good brain tease, this is a doozy! youtube/watch?v=5jQq6BiT-eI
