Someone mentioned that my photography is unconventional and needs - TopicsExpress

Someone mentioned that my photography is unconventional and needs some adjustments. Of course, I laughed when he said adjustments... Is that a Lightroom joke? I reflected passively into my mug of maccha. That just made him irritated, which made me grin even wider. Intention is in the voice and body language, and it was written in bold red Sharpie with a middle finger on this young mans forehead. He seriously couldnt have been much older than me. I actually took the insulting gesture as a compliment....A huge one in fact. I live to bend the rules. A little controversy means Im doing it right. I reigned the throne of natural defiance during babyhood! Conventional...Pfft. I have some cookie-cutter work, but thats all part of learning how to be versatile. >:} Who ever said I wanted to be conventional with my work anyways? Who died and made this bloke the flawless and successful ARTEEST he apparently makes himself out to be? I almost made a remark about his slip-on Vans sneakers and skinny jeans, but I managed to maintain my personal mockery of his Hipster culture within the confines of my own mind due to being in my work environment. The film camera he was carrying with him almost sent me over the edge with laughter though. Upon inquiring about his History with art and photography, I came to learn that he was a student at a very profit-focused art school in SF. The icing on the cake....Product photographer. At least a graduated one, but now working a shit-retail job he hates because he cant find photography work. Thousands of dollars for education, for....Oh, I know! Useful skills, right? Verbalizing the assumption that if you arent a full-time artist, you arent a professional. Maybe I dont want to be full-time. Maybe its not meant to be, maybe it will come in the future. Heres some food for thought: Professionalism is about your attitude and your connection with clients. Its not in your resume, or your money, or your certificates. Those are lies made of paper and cotton. The truth of professionalism is in your interaction, your punctuation. I offered to trade him business cards, but he didnt have any. I gave him one of my own and recommended him to read my About section for my Facebook page. Maybe he should spend his weed money on some business cards. He practically gave the entire store a new perfume. Bravo!!! The education system spits out another equipment-consumer cookie-cutter artist mentality. (Dont get me wrong, Ive met some really cool cats that are current and former students...But this artistic mentality that I notice growing within my generation is just killing me.) I wonder if THIS fellow has ever gotten job offers and recommendations for work in LA....Surely, my stuff is way too unconventional for that! *end sarcasm* I hope he read this. Check yourself, because you wrecked yourself hard buddy. ;)
