I always wondered this, because I found it strange how she would stay with Mike and even have another baby with him, if she was aware of the affair. By the way, I love your page! Our answer: Thanks very much! As to Phyllis, there are some things that one needs to understand. First of all, to our knowledge, she did indeed know about the affair Mike had with Nurit and Nurit’s subsequent pregnancy. But when you love someone and are married to someone—and have children with them—the reaction to such a situation is just not as easy as “Well, he cheated, that’s it, I’m out.” It is *especially* not easy when the person you are married to is a very famous music star, and in the case of Phyllis, she herself was marketed in teen magazines as “the perfect wife and mother.” The teen mags held up Phyllis up as this ideal and made her a celebrity in her own right, featuring articles about how she cooked for Mike and catered to all of his needs, how she was a fantastic mom to Christian, and even tips for how to have hair and makeup like hers. So Phyllis had to deal with all of this pressure that was on her, being in the public eye and held to such high standards, and with the prevailing societal mindset that women faced at the time, which was very much “Stand by your man.” More than that, though, she clearly loved Mike, and he was the father of her children, so she most probably really wanted to work things out. And in all likelihood, they had Jessica because they took the route that many struggling married couples take, which is the “Let’s have another kid to fix our marriage” route. Obviously it didn’t do the trick, but it stands to reason that when you’re going through something like what Phyllis went through, you try to do what you think is best, even if it doesn’t end up working out.
