Someone on fb asked (in a snidey way, no doubt) what does world class mean?. Well, heres a clue. On the upcoming (live) recording (at The Royal Albert Hall) recording you can hear the singer quietly say Dave.., queuing Dave Ital to take a solo on a song hes never played before, let alone rehearsed. To improvise such a stunningly sure footed carved in marble solo under such circumstances sounds pretty world class to me. Which is why Daves made a good living raising his family as a professional guitar player over a few decades, having been employed by not only by the likes of Jo Harman but, more impressively perhaps, the likes of Beyonce, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, Jimmy Cliff, Sly And Robbie (just a few names off the top of my head) plus dozens of other major label artists, household names, maverick genius talents (like Lewis Taylor, who also hired Dave) and chart artists. Its easy to throw terms around, or make light of peoples hard earned talents and reputations... sometimes less easy to back it up with facts and common sense. Will the likes of Dave bother the radar of those picking guitarist of the year lists or whatever? of course not (and fair enough, perhaps). But its like Wayne Rooney being picked to play for the school team. FFS get on the agenda people. Sometimes when championing this or that or putting someone down you really gotta understand what good really sounds like.
