Someone once told me that we spritz perfume on ourselves to disguise the slow decay of our bodies. Watching River of Fundament felt like a durational assault of all senses, scent included. It was so visually intense and sonically throbby, but the strangest thing was that I kept smelling whiffs of perfume during key moments in the film. I honestly thought I was losing my mind, or I was sleepy (I proceeded to have 4 coffees during the breaks), or that I had triggered synaesthesia in myself (most exciting theory!), and that things from now on would smell pointy and taste like pink ribbons etc. Reading The Guardian article, it all makes sense now. Im starting to wonder how many viewers that night subconsciously incorporated the IRL scent into their experience of the film, thus catapulting them further into Barneys cyclical world of re-birth and decay.
