Someone please explain to me how college athletes deserve to be paid to play college sports. Yes, college sports bring in loads of revenue...for a small portion of the highest level schools. What about the kids at small D2, D3 schools who dont even have available scholarships? The NLRB decision is going to destroy the institution of collegiate athletics as we know it. As a former college athlete, I know the costs of attending school and playing sports simultaneously. The cost of attending school includes all meals and a dorm room, as well as books. Now outside of that, what do these student-athletes actually NEED? I feel like we are further blurring the lines between needs and wants more and more every day. You dont go to college strictly for sports, and if you are, then you arent researching your decision properly, given the fact that less than 1% of all college athletes go on to be professional athletes. Do medical students get paid to do their residencies? Do business majors get paid for internships? No. So why are athletes entitled to pay for playing a game? I just dont get it. If athletes want to get paid then get a damn job. Stop crying because you think youre entitled to pay and remember why youre in school. Youre a STUDENT-athlete, not vice versa. Start acting like it. Make a contribution to society rather than acting like an 18-22 year old child. Youll get paid when you get a degree.
