Someone recently asked me what happened to the money collected during the Million Man March. Its interesting that there is a culture of distrust that we have with one another, where every black man is taught to believe that every other black man is a crook. Ironically, we rarely show this sort of scrutiny toward politicians and corporations who take our money and give nothing back. For the record, there was an independent audit and it showed that the Nation of Islam used the money in legal and appropriate ways. But whats interesting to me is that no one asks what Walmart does with the money we spend in their stores. I say that Farrakhan did a great thing by pulling this march together and we should all be glad to contribute a few dollars to help him get compensation for lifting a community. Teachers get paid to teach, doctors get paid to heal, so leaders should be paid to lead. Theres nothing wrong with that. If we refuse to financially support our leaders, then Im not sure how we can get upset when theyve been bought out and co-opted. Theyve got to pay bills just like everybody else.
