Someone recently posted this wonderful picture from Gasoline Alley in 1961. This is the McCullough Engineering Special, this car was one of two new cars constructed by Edgar Elder in 1961 and the car was entered without a sponsorship. The McCullough sponsorship was picked up when their car didnt make the race. The car was then entered at the Speedway by Edgar Elder with chief mechanic Charlie Altfater and driver Cliff Griffith. Cliff qualified the car on day 3 at 145.038 and bumped Norm Hall in doing so. Cliff would start the 500 in 30th position. Cliffs race day ended early after 55 laps with a burned piston and he ended up finishing 24th. The car returned to the Speedway in 1962 as the Stearly Motor Freight and was entered by United Rentals with Barney Wimmer turning wrenches and Ronnie Duman as the driver. Ronnie turned a 146.908 in practice the Friday before the first day of trials. The team thought they had the race made when they accepted their speed on day 3 but fell just short when Jim Hurtubise bumped them with just 2 and 1/2 minutes remaining before the 6:00 pm gun. The car was also a DNQ in 1963 with Bob Christie at the wheel.
