Someone that knows me at the gym asked me yesterday mid-workout if I ever get sore because of all the volume I put in on a weekly basis. Its been very rare recently for me but it made me realize that maybe a lot of you are suffering from muscle soreness and DOMS. Its a myth that you get sore after a workout because of lactic acid buildup in the muscle. Lactic acid build up causes that burn you feel while lifting but youre sore afterwards because of the microtears that occur in your muscles as a result of some overload or external stimulus ie., weights. There are instances when new movements, changes in regimen etc., result in prolonged soreness but thats to be expected as your body adapts to new stimuli. There is a trick to feeling better, sooner! You ready for this? . . . . . . . SLEEP! Your body makes its significant repairs during sleep. So after challenging workouts or starting a new regimen its imperative you give your body the proper nutrition for your goals and SLEEP. Slow digesting proteins like Casein and complex carbs for dinner will fuel your metabolism through the night and help keep you out of a catabolic (muscle degrading) state. This isnt for everyone as some of you guys have different goals but if youre trying to put on muscle mass either for self esteem, athletics etc., I figured Id drop some advice and knowledge.
