Someone wrote to me the other day asking if I had favourites among the novels I’d written. I looked at my shelves and felt a special affection for just two or three of them. They weren’t perhaps the most popular with readers and nor did they win the universal praise and attention they so richly deserved from the critics, but they are my certainly my best beloved. They sent my imagination soaring, satisfied my sense of mischief and in their writing most nearly succeeded in matching my skills with my ambition. Do all writers have their favourite children?
