Something Good: WE GOT THIS! Too often we see headlines about negative things that occur in our community, & we do not give the same energy & attention to the positive. I am a believer that the positive works being done in our community must be lifted up so this Something Good report is my attempt to enlighten, inspire & inform the community about the great work being done to improve & strengthen our neighborhoods, community & city. This first report is about an initiative called WE GOT THIS, started about 20 weeks ago under the leadership of Andre Lee Ellis at the community garden on 9th & Ring. Every Saturday morning at 8:00 am what has grown to be nearly 100 young men from across the city, most between the ages of 12-17 years old, gather at the corner of 9th & Ring to work from 8am - 12pm helping in the garden & cleaning up the neighborhood. In exchange for their hard work the young men are compensated w/ a $20 payment. Residents from all over the city head the call, primarily through social media, to come & sponsor a young man by dropping by to donate $20. The scene at the garden is wonderful, people pulling up in cars to donate & witness the young men work & be mentored. Several men from the community, fathers, activists, businessmen, & politicians alike all volunteer their time & advice for the young men every Saturday. The message of self worth, personal responsibility & growth that these young men receive every week is reflected in the energy you feel just standing amongst them, in their work ethic, and in the way they interact with each other & the neighborhood. The WE GOT THIS campaign is just one example of the power of the community coming together to address its own issues. This Saturday, will be special, it is the last day of the summer portion of this initiative, the young men will report as usual at 8am to work and at 10am a ceremony celebrating the young men who participated throughout the summer and the work they have done for the community will take place. I encourage everyone, whose tired of the negative stories about our community, everyone who is wondering what kinds of things can be done to help change conditions in our neighborhoods and those who just want to support something good to come out to 9th & Ring tomorrow, Saturday, August 30th... See you there! #WeGotThis #9th&Ring https://m.youtube/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=9_rbfhY6gRo
