Something I find concerning is the constant messaging we get as Americans that we need to work, work, work. Compared to many other advanced countries around the world, we work way more hours while our wages are stagnating, and we have much less time off. Many of us dont even take the vacation time we earned. When people ask us how we are doing, many believe the best answer is Im really busy. As someone who currently holds three jobs, I have been really thinking lately about the importance of rest. My time spent overseas has shown me the benefits of the cultural, collective idea that the good things in life are not to be found in an office; that spending time with friends and family is key; that long, relaxed dinners should be a regular habit; taking long walks is important; taking time to notice how the seasons change and getting to know the rhythm of the earth helps us keep grounded. Im all for getting things done but more and more I notice how we are bombarded with messages that we should always be working: from that ludicrous Cadillac commercial that got so much attention, to the lambasting of the President for taking a few days off, to the helpful articles we find on major media sites about managing our time. Harried, stressed people who dont get enough sleep dont create the best product. Its not just OK to rest -- its imperative! Im going to start this myself by cutting off my workday today at 2pm.
