Something I have always wondered (and of which I am reminded as I drive north from Seattle for an hour or so) -- why are all the cities and major towns in Washington situated about 30 miles apart on I-5 all the way from the Oregon to Canada borders? An average of 33.5 miles apart, to be exact, according to my back-of-the-napkin figures (literally, here at my lunch stop at the Mount Vernon Taco Time): Vancouver - Longview: 42 miles Longview - Chehalis: 41 miles Chehalis - Olympia: 29 miles Olympia - Tacoma: 31 miles Tacoma - Seattle: 34 miles Seattle - Everett: 28 miles Everett - Mount Vernon: 34 miles Mount Vernon - Bellingham: 28 miles Bellingham - Canada border: 25 miles Any ideas, facts, thoughts, or opinions? Is it a historic thing (comfortable distance travelled by horse in a day, Model T on a tank of gas), a modern one (optimal distance between commercial centers), or just random coincidence?
