Something I have been thinking about tonight: Heres what I have learned lately: we are deeply connected to each other through our humanity. By humanity, I mean, we are connected by our stories of heartache, pain, hope, forgiveness, renewal, rebirth. The truth—all of it, especially the messy, sticky parts—is what binds us. It is how we open our hearts to each other and experience a genuine connection. The word vulnerability gets tossed around a lot, but I dont think Ive truly understood the depth of it until recently. When I begun to refuse to hide away the parts of myself I was hiding away for whatever reasons I was using to convince myself I should, I begun to experience an actual transformation in my life and in my relationship to other people. Annoyance, judgment, frustration, shame, for the most part, these all either floated away effortlessly or were brought to the surface to be healed in an escalated way that I had never experienced before. Vulnerability means that we do not pretty up our truth. Because, sometimes our truth isnt pretty. Sometimes our hearts are filled with tar and need to be emptied, sticky drip by sticky drip. When we deny ourselves a connection with other humans in which our hearts are emptied, we are denying a fundamental aspect of our humanity. We are denying ourselves true connection. Because, true connection exists within those vulnerable moments, when we stand before another human and empty out our hearts and expose the parts of ourselves we have kept tucked away. This is how we heal. This is how we become whole.
