Something I never thought possible will happen on July 18, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. One or two of my paintings have been selected for the alumni show in the Slusser Gallery, Univ of Michigan School of Art and Design. Because I did not pursue a career in Fine Art, I thought having work to exhibit would never materialize. I am thrilled that I didnt let the intimidation of learning to paint with oil paints nor my nervousness about submitting my work to my art peers stop me from such a feeling of high. Join me in A2, 6-8 pm for a great party! Here is the jurors remarks about inclusion in the show.. When I began to review the submissions for the University of Michigan Alumni Exhibition my first criteria concerned the integrity of the object: is it well crafted and imagined for its media? In essence I made value judgments informed by over twenty years as a studio artist yet influenced by my curatorial training. The thornier issue in making selections for the 2014 exhibition was determining whether the artwork conformed to the theme, unintended consequences. As artists we discover new means of expression by inviting spontaneity, chaos even, into our studio processes. What materializes as an object/image or series of experiments challenges us to discern strengths and weaknesses in such courageous practice. We must discover which indicators, which criteria, to follow. It’s not easy to invite the unexpected and then recognize which outcomes to privilege. An example of unintended consequences might include an exquisite object that somehow demonstrates the maker’s discernment about personal expression and the creative process. However, we live in a social realm that is connected with broader networks. “Unintentional consequences” is a sociologic term that implies outcomes that were not anticipated by purposeful action in political, environmental, or interpersonal contexts. Increasingly artists are called to act as operators, actors or agents. With social engagement an artist’s task is to observe the result of certain circumstances in order to communicate their position. Fewer alumni submitted artwork that reflects this later approach yet the works in this group show a wide range of themes for the very personal to the overtly political. Rebecca Hart
