Something a lot of people don’t realise is when it comes to your gym exercises, there is a direct (or damn strong) correlation between how hard you work (not how hard you pretend or how hard you think you work) and your results, period (in regards to cosmetic physique enhancement whether ‘building up’ or ‘leaning down’).- provided hard work is backed with proper nutrition and ample recovery. Most guys I see are trying to lift too much weight (and interestingly its the opposite for females a lot of the time, so long as their technique is sound they should be attempting more weight) and are missing out on getting the most out of an exercise- sure most pay lip service to this fact, but few are willing to put their egos aside. Whenever I observe this and suggest even a subtle tweak or adjustment to an exercise, often (but not always) with less weight people are shocked at how much harder and intensely they feel the exercise in the target muscle (and right now we’re talking more specifically about ‘target training’ or isolating a muscle group which is one effective strategy in your gym exercise training arsenal). People have often been incredulous by my using 60-70% (sometimes less) of the weight they have while still achieving equal or oftentimes better results. One of the big reasons for this is ‘intensity’ and hard work are not just mentally activated phenomena- they are physically imbued within the nervous system through specific training over time, so that your body (not just mind) is conditioned to work hard too. This is a science, and I learned it from various Coaches over the years, the originator being Scott Abel who coined this particular training method innovation training, but it is just one viable way of doing things. This much I’ll tell you- it works, if you work it!
