Something has sucked the soul and passion out of the generations - TopicsExpress

Something has sucked the soul and passion out of the generations that have followed ours. When I say this, it is not a cry to find others who have a similar set of cultural reference points, but rather, those who are able to synthesize what reference points they have into something that feels real. Understanding the emptiness that surrounds does not require being deeply steeped in references to the 80s - knowing all the lyrics to *Bella Lugosi Is Dead* - or having lived through the cold war or apartheid. All it requires is empathy, acceptance, a sense of moral and personal responsibility, and a cynical appreciation for everything that will eventually destroy you. Ever since my pre-teens, Ive struggled to make sense of my inability to be around people; to reconcile my disdain for society with my need for emotional connections. Ive been overcome by regular bouts of self-loathing and loneliness, and Ive cast myself against too many pretty, young, jagged shores in an effort to find love again. My life has revolved around pop culture, and counter culture, and false fame, and constantly chasing that desire to be universally adored. From emo to hipsters and haters, pop culture is at an all-time low. For every person with an opinion - educated or not - there are thousands of others waiting to shout them down; a decent into cultural homogeneity that reeks of a desire to be accepted in the eyes of your peers. And granted, not every opinion is worth being heard, but the group mentality that has resulted in the dismissive dont be a hater, has done us no favors. Hate things. Despise things. Rail against things and let things make you feel like you want to rip them apart. We will get nowhere without passionate hatred as a catalyst. Be sad. Find things that are uncommon. Express yourself in ways that demonstrate an understanding of who you are. Being true to your convictions does not make you a pussy. Having a concept of what you like, and what it is that drives you, is not what fuels negative pretense. Dont be a sellout. Dont be someones whore. No matter what they offer; no matter how much money you make, or who you meet, the results are never worth it. Earn everything you have. Make your life difficult for yourself, because those who have had it easy will never appreciate what they have.
