Something said at yesterdays meeting stuck with me and must be posted. What is happening in south central Child Welfare Services is not truly unique. It happens nationwide. The concept of white privilege is real and alive. It may not even be understood by those imposing their perceived authority. What can be done is that San Diego County through Community Action can become an example of bringing it to light and bring it to an end. Institutional racism can be perpetuated by one or two leaders placed in the wrong positions of authority. The impact is immense, unjust yet easily seen through targeting, targeting actions toward specific groups of people. The County of San Diego missed the point completely in their white privileged way of looking at things. This is different from disciplining employees it is about targeting groups to discipline. Blonde and red haired, blue eyed employees are not being targeted for discipline; others with dark hair, dark eyes, and dark skin are the targets. San Diego can become the example for stopping, through community effort, the institutional racism and discrimination. Let us be the example for the nation in stopping these shameful practices. Let The San Diego Community become a national leader in stopping and changing Institutional Racism.
