Something to Contemplate As we pretend we care about our veterans today, remember that we are doubling boots on the ground in Iraq. Supporting the Troops, doesnt just mean putting a magnet on my car, or nodding at a man or woman in camouflage at the mall. It means making sure they are supported by our social system when they return, it means making sure they arent waiting months for medical service because my politicians dont want to fund the VA. It means making sure that they put their lives on the line for beneficial causes that truly protect us. Supporting veterans means making sure there are fewer of them coming home with injuries and suffering from PTSD. It means not getting excited when politicians attempt to rile us into wars on behalf of defense contractors. On Veterans Day we have a moral obligation to make sure that the people willing to die for our families are not just recognized for that willingness, but are protected from our diplomatic failures, and our craven politicians and the people who use them for profit. To truly celebrate Veterans, we must take our DUTY to them seriously, and commit to never allow them into harms way unless it is completely unavoidable and the foe represents true danger to US civilians. Allowing American Service men and women to be used for intentionally destabilizing regions on behalf of commodity traders and multinational corporations who donate to election campaigns is not being a dutiful citizen. But most importantly, when we have let them down, we must stand up and make things right. Please join me in giving a little back to the men and women who have lost their futures on behalf of ours.
