Something to Think About: Do we really believe that everyone is a winner? Some people really do lose? Attempting to cheer up his dishearten son. Walking off the field, tears in his eyes, his father’s arm around his shoulder the boy listen as his father said, “It really doesn’t matter if you win or lose son as long as you did your best.” Looking up at the score board the son replies, “Than why do they keep score?” These words, I believe show the depth of our superficiality. I could pontificate for pages on this particular subject but I won’t. I’m however amused by our unimaginative approach to these trifles of accomplishment. We need to orient our children and ourselves to the fact that while everybody begins the race on the starting line everyone does not cross the finish line – some people lose - marriages actually end in divorce – people actually go to prison for life – some business end in bankruptcies – people really do die and go to Hell. And there are no participation ribbons in divorce court – prison or Hades. We must let our children know that it’s okay to come in last in a race, it’s okay to lose a ball game; we are all too often distracted by the temporal and lose sight of the eternal. It’s time to shift our focus and allow God the privilege of shaping our children through failure before it’s eternally late.
