Something to think about whilst your WW1 candle is lit! WW1 is still to this day considered the most savage of all wars. Over 15 million lives lost and over 20,000 in one day at the somme. Over 180 thousand chinese helped us dig the trenches. Soldiers regularly woke up in the trenches soaked to the skin and freezing surrounded by rats knawing at their uniforms. The battlefield artillery was so loud that it could be heard and felt over 100 miles away. Over 300 thousand horses died. Over 4000 message carrying dogs died. Of the men lucky to survive,over 80 thousand suffered from shell shock rendering their lives a living hell. Around 1.3 million indian soldiers served along side our men. Over 12 million tons of supplies were lost at sea sunk by U boats. Some facts and figures are too harsh and graphic for this site but can bring tears to the eyes of even the hardest of men. On a more lighter note,having fought two wars against the germans in the last 100 years they are now considered in europe to be one of our closest modern day allies! .
