Something very interesting happened earlier today and trying to figure it out....was out in the yard tearing up weeds, loosening up earth and applying some grass seed/mulch to a patch of ground between our driveway and the next door neighbors property. It has been looking very ragged this summer and I decided to work on it today. Our dog, Mallou was in the yard for a while earlier this morning and was generally relaxing on the table we have out there. After getting all the work done I went into the house to get something and when I came back out to use the hose to water I noticed something that I would swear I had not seen before-the back half of a rabbit-legs and all-laying in the middle of a patch of yard! Now Mallou has killed a few small animals this year-squirrels and rabbits-but we feel that since there is probably some form of hunting dog in there somewhere along with his wanting to play that he just gets worked up and if he is playing with one of these creatures he just gets carried away and like in the cartoon Lonesome Lenny he kills it...and then we bury them and thats about it. But this was the first time only half of the animal was left and he has never tried to eat them afterwards, so this concerned me, and if someone just walks on the sidewalk in front of the house he barks like crazy and usually does the same if someone comes up the drive-even if he has seen them many times and has done it with me. I buried the remains and finished up outside and went in to shower. After that, while still pondering how Mallou was able to rend that rabbit so neatly, I looked out the back window and noticed that our bird feeder was empty, so I went outside to get the bag of bird seed and lo! and behold-exactly where the back half of the rabbit had been was the front end, also neatly cut off! Now I was beginning to wonder what the dog was up to and where he had managed to hide it, considering I had looked for a place I could bury the other half so I would not have to worry about something coming along and digging it up and did not see that front part anywhere. I took care of the bird feeder, got the shovel again and dug another hole and buried the other half. Totally puzzled, I was standing in the kitchen and mentioned the latest find to Paul, my stepson, and he posed the theory that someone was doing this deliberately and that Mallou was blameless. I had pretty much come to the same conclusion for the latter but now I am wondering about someone doing this deliberately and even more-why? I saw no one hanging around the back yard in the driveway (the only way that someone could have gotten to that spot with that much accuracy) and have not heard from anyone in the neighborhood saying anything against anyone in our house. There was a run-in with the next-door neighbor to the east over the other dog we had (he bit someone and as part of the settlement with the homeowners insurance we had to put him to sleep) but that was over two years ago and we really have had no contact since. And a little over a week ago while I was standing in the front yard putting some branches on the tree lawn a couple of teen-age girls rode by on their bikes and as they passed one said Thats the house where some little b____ lives and we dont like each other and kept going until the end of the block where she and other girl stopped and appeared to go into one of the houses. Again, I saw no one and heard nothing but this is damn strange and just a bit scary-I hope we dont get anymore animal carcasses (partial or whole) put in our yard or someone thinking of doing something to our dog or even us.
