Somethings got to change. Hear me rant. I thought the general populace had gotten more accustomed to bikes, but bicycling in Manhattan is just crazy. The West Side bike path yesterday, a summer Saturday afternoon, was so crowded with speed demon bikers, lotti dah citibike couples who bike slowly and side by side allowing no one to pass (combined with attitude when you ask for them to allow you to pass), skaters (waving their arms and legs also preventing passing), piles of horse shit from police on horses, clueless pedestrians (some with unruly dogs) and families out for a fun ride with kids waving all over the bike path. If that wasnt bad enough, avoiding the crowded and crazy bike path to return from uptown, I chose the 9th Avenue bike path around 7pm. This route had some of the above challenges, but it also had cars parked in the bike lane, people pouring out of bars standing, sitting or walking in the narrow bike path AND other bikers or skate boarders going the wrong way in the bike path! By the time I got down to the village my neck was so tense and my mood so frazzled by clueless and entitled New Yorkers (ok, some were tourists) that it took a long time to calm down. Why do I put myself in this dangerous and miserable situation? Some of the answer may be with my timing. I should avoid Manhattan on weekends, especially in the Summer. I generally do avoid this but biking is how I get around. Maybe I should just use the subway like everyone else at those times. My attitude might be a little less, shall we say, crabby?
