Sometime ago, I was a volunteer with the Samaritans, a suicide prevention group. The basic idea was to befriend the sufferer. Obviously, theres a bit more to the methods we were trained in, but thats the fundamental idea behind how we worked. I am only acquainted with one person with PTSD, and certainly, his name wont be mentioned. However, there is something that everyone can do. If you know of someone suffering, you can behave as the friend that he might need, right at that specific moment in time. You dont have to address the cause or symptoms. You can talk or listen to any subject that comes to mind. None of us imagine that you treat or cure, but you can help that person buy the time that he needs to continue his struggle. If its a moment of crisis, you or he can speak to a skilled, trained counselor, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline on 1800 273 8255. Life is precious, and the pain that your friend is suffering is just as real as a physical injury. Listen to him or her, sometimes it can make just enough of a difference for him to save his life.
