Sometime back I began to receive hints that we were entering a new phase in the application of international terrorism. Only hints at first, but these were confirmed and followed by stronger evidence. The war on terrorism has been going on for a lot longer than you can imagine. It is an ideological war that has been raging for a very long time. The Greeks and Spartans fought it against the Persian Empire, but today, we fight it across Africa with our enemies doing it in the name of Allah. Mali, Chad, Nigeria, Niger, the Central African Republic, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Djibouti... all face terror threats. In 2011, our National Intelligence Service (NIS) issued a report saying it had disrupted an attack by al Shabaab commander Ikrima which was organized/funded by a South African network. The report claimed al Shabaab was receiving logistical support from a group in South Africa. (Fast forward...) ETHIOPIA: the other day, Ethiopian security captured two terrorist cells belonging to a terrorist sect called Kaworja. The group of 25 are linked to two global terrorist organizations: al Shabaab and al Qaeda. They trained in Somalia. GET THIS; the first group receives instructions from an unnamed terrorist organization operating in South Africa. The group shuttles between Kenya and South Africa. The second group received support and instructions from jihadist cells in Yemen, the United Kingdom and Sudan. You will recall that some of the attackers at Westgate Mall were al Qaeda operatives. Known international terrorists have been spotted in Somalia. NIGERIA: Boko Haram is an al Qaeda affiliate. Some of its top commanders and fighters have trained in Somalia. Shabaabs attacks against Kenya are greatly influenced by the groups successes in committing acts of violence in northern Nigeria. UGANDA: Four Landcruisers with fake GOK and UN registration number plates entered Uganda through a porous border point in Busia. Ugandan security forces are on high alert. TANZANIA: The security intelligence institutions arrested businessmen behind the funding and managing of terror cells. KENYA: As someone put it; Why do we still allow terrorists continue to franchise their networks? Why cant we deal with these businessmen and leaders who fund terror cells in this country? We should deal with them decisively. Cut the head off the snake...! Africa is now the new theatre for global jihad. I think it is safe to say, security is Africas biggest challenge.
