Sometime in 2001, people were wondering how, why and could we win in the partylist elections. Maswerte na pag nakakuha ng isa, they said. You wish, some said. Well, the voters surprised everyone that year. Bayan Muna was voted as topnotcher, the No. 1 partylist. It brought street parliamentarians to Congress -- the incorruptible trio of Satur Ocampo (of Pampanga), Liza Maza (of San Pablo, Laguna) and Crispin Beltran (the uragon labor leader from Albay). Since then, people like us could say We have our own in Congress. Theyre from Bayan Muna. And then the party inspired other parties that now compose the Makabayan bloc. They are outstanding lawmakers: Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act; Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act; Public Attorneys Act; Tax Relief Act; Rent Control Act; Anti-Torture Act - among others. Their investigations have yielded results: The Purchased Power Adjustment (refunded!), the Disbursement Acceleration Program (unconstitutional!) and the recent Meralco power rate hike (stopped!) Both GMA and PNoy have tried to demonize Bayan Muna, but the people still love and support their champions in Congress.
