Sometime in the early 90s, The Standard published in its letters page a contribution from a reader that said some things about the Prophet Mohammad not too amusing to some intolerant religious bigots. A day or so after publication, The Standard offices in Mombasa were burnt down as other threats against head office and other installations, flowed in. The newspapers Managing Director, accompanied by a couple of senior editors, yours truly included, were compelled by the charged environment to dash to the coastal city to make peace with top Moslem leaders. A revisit to this, among other local incidents of note, would have helped enhance last nights PressPass discourse that focussed on last weekends terror attack on offices of Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical publication. Colleagues, what became of the traditional practice of reading, researching and consulting prior to sitting before the cameras?
