Sometime in the late summer of 1966, I was working the 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM shift in Fair Haven. as I approached a red traffic light on Blatchley and Grand Avenue, I noticed the car in front of me, a Renault Dauphine, had a cardboard license plate on the rear. The law says if you lose a license plate, first report it to the Motor Vehicle Department and then make a temporary plate out of cardboard with the exact plate numbers on it. Well, this cardboard plate said, DC-1 with new haven on top and connecticut on the bottom. Something is not right so I pulled along side of the young operator and told him to pull over when the light turned green, Instead, be sped off, while the light was still red and turned left into Grand Avenue. With me in pursuit we passed Ferry Street and proceeded east on Grand Avenue, then turned into Clinton Avenue. Another left into Chatham Street toward Ferry Street. The low speed chase continued for approximately 20 minutes. Finally we were traveling on Front Street and he turned sharp left into the projects when his car rolled over and landed on its side. This young man climbed out of the broken side window and ran toward the apartments where I tackled him. Turns out that he owned the car, only it was not registered so he made his own cardboard license plate from the brown color of the inside of a Cheerios box. I kept the cardboard plate as evidence for court but I lost it years ago. I made a paper plate from my memory just to show what I observed that day. Connecticut license plates always started with 2 letters and then 3 numbers. Example: AV-733 but never DC-1. Also attached is a picture of a Renault Dauphine from Google search.
