Sometimes I feel that the only people who understand veterans, are veterans. We are thanked for our service but when it comes to adapting back into the civilian world, its true we dont feel like we fit anymore. We were once part of something larger than us and we made it all go. When we get out, thats gone overnight and we miss it to say the least. It haunts us. In the military, you are never alone but when you get out, you are always by yourself. No one has your back anymore. It seems when you reach out for help, it either takes too long or theres simply no answer and because you were in the military, you are expected to suck it up and carry on. Occasionally youll meet another vet but at times, misery doesnt like company either. Its a double edged sword where we dont want the attention but need it desperately.... I dont regret serving, but I truly miss my team(s) each and every day. We put our lives in each others hands each and every day. I just lost someone I got in contact with through facebook and learned he took his own life at the end of October... It was nice to catch up with him again for a short while. Some war vets are so haunted by what they had to do, they really need help now and are struggling and the real sad part is, we know who they are. Are we going to continue to ignore this or are we really going to do something about it. I hope my words are heard in hopes it will help my brothers and sisters who are deep within themselves, suffering and struggling each and every day. Stay strong, dont lose the fight. You have served and deserve all of our love and attention. Sometimes because of the channels we are forced to use to get help, it simply takes too long. Help for those who are really struggling needs to be more readily available,... the suicide hot line should NOT put you on hold, or make you wait a couple of months for an available appointment. Some vets dont feel deserving either because they feel there are brothers and sisters out there that need help ahead of them... That is a vets mindset, putting others before their self.
