Sometimes I get some of the old songs I remember my Daddy and his Brothers and Sisters singing at Uncle Bill and Aunt Verna Maes. Church hymns and old gospel songs, bluegrass songs. I remember the tunes and the way the songs sounded and I hum them to myself, sometimes singing to myself. Ive tried to find some of the same songs online - they say you can find anything online, right? - but none of the songs that I find are sung right. The tune is just not right or the tempo is way too fast or too slow or......its just not my Daddy playing the guitar and singing with everyone else is the problem I reckon. Memories are so precious and even if I never find anyone on YouTube or any other website that can sing Ive Just Seen the Rock of Ages the way I recall hearing my Daddy sing it, Ill just have to treasure that memory. Theres a tape I have, its packed away someplace safe...with the move I am sad to say Im not sure where that safe place is. I am hoping a praying that the song I want to hear is on there. My Momma told me a little of the story behind that song they recorded. It called for a pretty high pitch and I think my Dad may have even had to start over a couple times (not sure) But Uncle Ray was kind of shaking his head thinking hed never be able to pull it off. I reckon that stubborn Pack in my Daddy came through because he did pull it off. Mom said Uncle Ray was shaking his head again after that but in that kind of disbelieving, well I reckon you proved me wrong... kind of way. As a little girl none of this interested me much but now I wished I would have just sat down and soaked it all in, listened and memorized every second of moments like that, to tide me over for days when I wouldnt have the chance to ask my Dad to sing that song for me. I miss that man so much. Still. Always.
