Sometimes I think that overly saccharine wedding videos with voiceovers about meeting ones one true love who will love them for the rest of their lives should only be released when the couple has made it through, say, AT LEAST 10 and preferably 40 years of marriage. ;-) Or, better yet, frame it more like Hey! We really, REALLY love each other and decided to take vows to honor, respect and grow together for what we hope will be a long time. This is just the beginning of the story ... stay tuned to see what happens next! It would be more honest. And less pressure on the poor couple. Implicitly what the romantic words are saying is: YOU - and ONLY YOU - MUST BE MY EVERYTHING - satisfy me in every way, intellectual, physical, emotional, spiritual - UNTIL I CROAK OR ELSE - and that seems like a lot of weight to put on ones purported life partner. Im not intending to be cynical (Im the furthest thing from a cynic), but I also think that reducing unrealistic expectations might help a bit with the actual marriage part. ;-) Just a thought.
