Sometimes, I wish my brain simply had a download button, because there is so much I want to learn. That thought leads me to a place where I contemplate learning. There are different ways to learn. Sometimes we get stuck on the need to learn where things simply become mundane and mechanical; They are the I have to learns in our lives that we may not enjoy or feel necessary to learn. And then there are the things we want to learn that lead us to show up early, eagerly, and full of anticipation for all well gain and use. If I simply downloaded the things I needed to know, I would never experience the joy in discovering the things I desire to know. Knowledge is like a treasure hunt, because you might start out searching for one thing, and learn about 10 others before the discovery is complete. This is what makes learning a journey that takes us an entire lifetime to complete. Pondering my thoughts a little deeper, I can see how teaching can go from the need to know leading people to the desire to know where they learn that there is excitement in learning. They go from having to show up to wanting to show up. They go from having to participate to desiring to participate. They go from bored to excited. Sometimes they go back and forth between the need and the desire arriving at different points throughout their searches and journeys. Thats what I love about being a lifelong student and preaching and teaching community Bible studies. Not only do I get to experience all the excitement and passion that comes with it, but I get to see others enjoy it, too. On those days I want to download everything I need to know because I feel the pressure to know it all right now, I can back up and remember the joy in the journey of learning. I learn and apply what I learn, because I get to experience the lessons and discoveries in a way that a mere download would never allow. And that makes all the difference in how I perceive and apply what I learn. Our experiences in learning are what make the lessons personal. And, when things get personal, it becomes relational and relevant. As things become relevant, the application of what weve learned becomes apparent and most useful. Man, that is EXCITING!!! Its what I love most about life and the people I get to share it with!
