Sometimes Im a little slow on the uptake. For instance, when I received a listing of a larger presss most recent releases today (they release a good number a month), it finally hit me: its not that their books are any better than ours - and the ones Ive purchased or read online or seen at the bookstore have been substantially not better - but the sheer number they publish makes them enough profit to stay afloat. Great writing? Nothing substantial. Great covers? Decent, but not the best Ive ever seen. Short runs? Yes, but they have a huge audience used to what they produce, so they snatch them up rather quickly. Its the big press game, isnt it? My lesson: I still think what we do (and using POD almost exclusively, like a number of small presses do these days) is a far cry more profitable in a literary sense, even if not in a monetary sense. Im happy with that; Im /very/ happy with that.
