Sometimes doing the right thing and giving glory to God involves suffering trial and even death. We often falsely assume that if we do Gods will our life will be easy, comfortable, and free from persecution. But remember Jesus and His suffering though perfect. Remember His words to the disciples in Mt. 10:22-25, You will be hated by all men on account of me. Remember the words of the Apostle Paul who suffered much for the Lord and wrote to Timothy in II Timothy 3:12, All who desire to be godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Robert Morgan in his historical devotion On This Day reminds us of John Hooper a faithful preacher of the gospel and a godly man who was chained in a sewer before being executed: January 7, 1554: “On the one side is the stink and filth of the house, and on the other side the town ditch, so that the stench hath infected me with sundry diseases—during which time I have been sick; and the doors, bars, and chains being closed, and made fast upon me, I have mourned and cried for help … neither is there suffered any to come at me whereby I might have relief. But I commit my cause to God, whose will be done, whether it be by life or death.” Hooper soon fulfilled that commitment. While being burned at the stake, his voice joined those of the assembled crowd praying, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. …” God glorifying Christianity is not all ease and pleasure as the false teachers will tell you, but it is to follow Jesus, it is right, and gives glory to God.
