Sometimes in rescue, you happen to come across one of those animals that no matter what you try to do, or how patient you are, they just cannot be figured out. We took Duiwey in last spring, not knowing for sure what his situation was, just knowing that he was not safe where he was. Throughout the last several months, we have tried over and over to help him overcome his issues. But no matter how hard we tried, he remained fearful of people and time and time again, showed signs that worried me that he just could not be found safe enough to be adopted out to anyone with plans of riding him in the future. As a private rescue, when we come across horses like these, we have to accept this and find a way to adapt to their needs and accept them for who they are and what they will never be able to be. But hope prevails again, and just when I began to accept that Duiwey would be deemed unadoptable, the miracle happened that showed me again, to never give up that hope. A couple existed, that sought out a horse that would only be needed to serve one main purpose, and that was to become the companion for a sad, lonely paint gelding who lost his pasture mate over the summer. I was honest with this couple, and told them about our concerns regarding Duiwey, but they wanted to give him a try with their gelding, Peanut. The Smiths arrived yesterday early afternoon. After spending some time handling him, they were happy with his overall temperment, and to my surprise, they loaded him in their trailer with no assistance from me. 2 hours later I received my first text message, followed by multiple pictures throughout the afternoon and still continuing today. The pictures of Duiwey and Peanut together, reminded me that regardless of how much we fear an animal will fail to meet the expectations of humans, meeting the expectations of another animal is sometimes the deciding factor. Turns out Duiwey was just perfect, according to Peanut, and its safe to say that the Smiths agree, as they look out into their pasture and see 2 beautiful horses, side by side, enjoying each others companionship. Love you, Duiwey, and Im so happy youve found a home where youll never be expected to be anything other then a horse.
