Sometimes it puzzles me how knee-jerk and reactionary people can get about films. I recall the Jewish community getting upset with Mel Gibsons powerfully moving and brilliantly directed The Passion of the Christ because they didnt like how Jews were depicted in the film, now some white people complain about films like 12 Years a Slave and The Butler because they feel theyre depicted horribly in those films. Weather anybody wants to admit or not, these are essential moments of history and we need essential films like this to show the harsh reality of our past sins. People need to stop rushing to judgement and watch these films for there merits, and distance their own emotional responses to the work. Its not fair to the filmmakers or the film.
