Sometimes, just sometimes the human race disgusts me, not just because of the sheer greed and hysteria over materialistic goods, but the way in which language is used to report news stories on the matter. Irish Water Charge protesters are a group of people who are demonstrating in public and showing their outrage at another tax to cripple their pockets. For the most part they are peaceful protests, even when they are not peaceful (no political figure has been physically injured), they are still defending their rights, their beliefs and their freedom. The press report this protest as though it were a civil uprising, on the footsteps of a civil war, the protestors are demonized by the political parties to such an extent that one candidate even compared them to ISIS! All this to stop a nation from expressing their opinion on the matter of being so broke at the end of the month they cant afford to feed their children, never mind themselves. Black friday, a day of ridiculous sales in other words, selling at shelf price, shops will still make a profit, otherwise they just wouldnt do it, is heralded as a great economic boost, a salvation of a civilization and the fights and scuffles are used to promote the day and attempt to get other countries to join in. People have died, been critically injured and received criminal records for the sake of a marked down T.V. Language is an incredibly powerful tool, unfortunately used and abused far too often to convince large numbers of people that wrong is right and right is wrong.
