Sometimes life is so friggin unfair. I decided no more orphan - TopicsExpress

Sometimes life is so friggin unfair. I decided no more orphan kittens for me. Only kits that are old enough to be weaned or ones that have their mom with them. In my experience, if they are with their mom until 8 weeks, their chances of developing a serious illness decreases significantly. This way I dont have to deal with all the stress and heartbreak of caring for orphans who may have no better than a 50% survival rate. So, I take in a group of 5 eight week olds who appear to be perfectly healthy. [As an aside, we picked up the kittens about 12 hours before Bella was killed.] But they all test positive for FeLV which is rare but something we routinely test for. It isnt exactly a death sentence, but it is highly contagious (according to our vet) and when young kits get it they are likely to die within the first 1-3 years. They dont deserve this. They did nothing wrong except being born into a world with a lot of greedy and irresponsible humans. Our vet even suggested we might want to consider euthanizing them at some point. No friggin way. Euthanizing 14 week old kittens who have no symptoms and have the same quality of life as any other kitten of the same age goes against everything rescue is about. We make our plans, but God has the last word.
