Sometimes life sneaks up on you. When you least expect it, a skeleton falls out of the closet, most times from your own closet. It has been hiding in there for a while but you’ve cleverly ignored it. Like that polka dot tie you received 10 Christmas’ ago you’ve forgotten, lost, neglected, and hoped to never see it again. Today, it stumbled out of the there like a drunk old man, falling flat on its face at your feet, impossible to ignore. The Change The phone rings. On the other end is the doctor telling you the test results have arrived and he needs to see you immediately. “Can you come in at 3?” You arrive thinking it can’t be that bad. You’ll get a prescription, follow a few doctors’ orders and be right back in the game. Only, that is not what transpires. The words that flow across his lips leave you in shock. This is going to demand a life change or it will demand your life. The Strategy Your thoughts race to the question, “How on earth will I deal with this?” Strategy is demanded. You need a fitness plan, a nutritional approach, a new lifestyle altogether. You feel weak, vulnerable, unable to rise to the challenge. You’ll need accountability and the support of a team. You’ll need some old fashioned butt kicks from someone who loves you. Every available tool will be required in this strategy if you are going to make it through. The most powerful tool of all, determination, will be your best friend. You must be determined and maintain your focus. The Reward Several months later, a few setbacks, some excruciatingly difficult days, and more moxy than you ever thought you could muster and you’ve begun to see positive results. You can play ball with your kids again. You’ve even signed up for that marathon in support of breast cancer. Life has made a change; one that you never thought possible before that dusty skeleton fell out of your closet. The Result The new you is 50 pounds lighter, eating whole, real, living foods, and working out 5 days a week. Only 25 pounds to go and you’ve reached your goal. The doctor now says that your condition is all but undetectable. The crisis has passed and you’ve gained a new life. Throughout this journey, you maintained your focus. Hard as it was and often remains, you established the strategy and you stuck with it. Now the harvest you reap is that of seeds sown, watered and nurtured.
