Sometimes, other Christians make me angry. REALLY angry. My family and I have made it a point for the last year or two to watch almost every broadcast of the NBC talent show The Voice. While the show isnt without its faults, it can also be pretty inspiring at times. Heres where the angry part comes in. Last night, the remaining contestants sang a group rendition of the hymn Will the Circle Be Unbroken. The original chorus did NOT include the word Lord, but it was added in later years. The version last night was sung according to the original lyrics...which has resulted in hundreds of outraged comments on the shows official Facebook page from Christians who claim the omission is a sign of persecution. Hellfire and brimstone are going to rain down on the producers and contestants. Blah, blah, blah. Etc, etc. Never mind that there have been DOZENS of positive references to God, Christ, and the Christian faith in general over the shows history these last couple of years. Below is the text of a post I made on The Voice Facebook page in response to all of this. It probably wont change anybodys mind, but it made me feel a little better. Sigh... Im beginning to wonder if even half the people spamming this page have WATCHED The Voice this season. If they have, they clearly havent been paying attention. Heres a rundown of the explicit references to God or the Bible in just ONE performance from two weeks ago. *Ahem* King David - One reference to the man God called A man after My own heart. THE LORD - Oh my goodness. TWO references. But wait!? I thought these heathens were trying to remove THE LORD from their show. Hey, isnt Matthew a pastors kid? Hallelujah - Ten references in two minutes. I counted. TEN explicit references to the Hebrew name of God on national television. Thats an awful lot for people who are conspiring to offend Christians everywhere. Wait. ARE THOSE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS IN THE BACKGROUND? That looks too much like a church. That might offend all the atheists in the audience. Maybe they should have taken it out. Or maybe...the producers of this inspiring show arent nearly as malicious as so many people are giving them credit for. Matthew is an inspiration to me. Ive been a pastors kid myself. It almost made me cry when he dedicated the song to his future wife. As a 28 year old man who still hasnt met the love of his life (as far as I know), I can relate to that sentiment. I pray for my future wife every single day. Please, please, please. THINK before you condemn, people. You dont get credit for defending Gods name unless theres a legitimate offense here. And there isnt, as far as Im concerned. Even if this WAS persecution, Ill bet there are a few Christians in China and North Korea who would gladly trade your persecution for theirs. What a disgrace to the name of Christianity. If I thought the anger and the irrationality on display here had ANYTHING to do with REAL Christianity, Id go join the nearest skeptics club TOMORROW. Thank the Lord *ahem* that Christ isnt nearly as uptight as some of his would-be followers are...
