Sometimes the reality of my life hits home and I realise that its impossible to balance out all the needs, expectations and demands of life. Being a sculptor doesnt help either, but to produce editions, find the time to develop new ideas, draw, print, do accounts, deal with continuous enquiries from clients, galleries and interested parties, spend the time I do with my three young children and deal with all my other domestic issues of cooking and maintenance its an impossibility. It doesnt help that all this has to be carried out on such a tight budget and subsequently it becomes an impossibility. When I answer emails it brings more emails of which I already get too many and as so often happens I get lost in a confusion of stuff that needs doing. Sometimes the level of contemplation and time to create new ideas is enough on its own to fill your life, but for years this has been compromised. At the moment Im still having to ignore many of lifes tedious realities that have overwhelmed my creative life, which is why many emails go unanswered and many chores are left undone. If I dealt with all these issues it would completely destroy the current phase that Im in with my work and I would not reach the levels that Im currently enjoying. As an artist it is easy to become a beast of burden because you have nothing to back up your position beyond the notion of possibilities, for this you can face a lot of disrespect during the challenging times. Making art teaches you a lot about human nature and survival isnt easy under all this pressure, Ive experienced being crushed by the expectations of ignorance and survived because inside I have great strength. In the end, to continue the struggle you have to growl ocassionally and throw out a few warnings to protect yourself so that you can retreat into the sanctity of thecreative process. Without the sacrifices people make to follow a creative life the world would become a dull place and Ive always believed that human expression is a sacred human right and worth protecting at any cost.
