Sometimes things that seem at odds with each other, or logically - TopicsExpress

Sometimes things that seem at odds with each other, or logically inconsistent with each other, only do so because of insufficient dimensions, insufficient data about the issue. It is possible that a and non-a are actually both true in some hyperspace with additional dimensions. Look at the picture, the question is if we could separate the dots in the plot at the left using a linear separator (a line in 2D). In 2D we most definitely cant, but adding one more dimension to the problem and selecting an appropriate transform of the original problem to this new space, we can do it easily as you can see in the plot at the right. What Im trying to say is that, it is quite a jump of (non)logic to pretend that our rules of logic and our eminently inductive knowledge of the universe seals anything about reality. Countless philosophers have been taken to task to solve these issues and there have been no agreement about whether or not we can actually know something beyond our inter-subjective agreement. Some of us would do better exercising a bit more of intellectual charity and get past the point where we try to win arguments just for the sake of winning. What have we won when we lure other people inside logical bait arguments? Honestly sometimes it looks like a bunch of 3 year old kids arguing about whose drawing of a comanche helicopter is correct. At the end of the day, every model is wrong and we should remember it. We live on an island surrounded by a sea of ignorance. As our island of knowledge grows, so does the shore of our ignorance. ~John Archibald Wheeler
