Sometimes traveling abroad is hard. Theres a LOT of people involved and they can all be rather cranky and demanding. (And cheap flights means more airports) But today I had a strong feeling it was going to be different. The dark early morning started out in bham saying goodbye to the most flexible, thoughtful parents I could ask for...and getting through security without having to take my overalls off :) Then later in NYC....I received life advice from an 82 year old Canadian women drapped beautifully in gold accessories - have more than one child and never accept a man who wont buy you a coffee - and then from a middle aged New Yorker whose eyes lit up with stories of leaving home to travel around europe her twenties - enjoy every moment you sweet young thing. Its not as fun in your 50s In Toronto, after a whirl through customs and baggage claim, a clerk put me in first class after saying....I just really appreciate looking up to see a warm, patient smile. Thats rare here. Enjoy the extra space and go for the cheese plate. Its my favorite :) Now sitting in St. Johns, Newfoundland for a brief layover, I remember this as the first place I traveled to with my dad when I was 14 and where my mom lived briefly as a kid. Then I heard my name over the intercom. Turns out I was put in first class AGAIN...so an older couple could sit together. The airport is scattered with Irish and Newfoundlanders - which means a whole lot of smiling, content, helpful people with good jokes to tell to pass the time. Travel with gratitude and curiosity and nothing can spoil your day. :) Also did I mention how close I am to seeing the man I love after 1 year and 4 months a part? The Atlantic Ocean looks like a little pond to me...just one more hop, skip, and sail...and Ill be in Ireland!
