Sometimes, what we think we see reveals what is in the core of our minds and values. The accompanying caption to this image, SUNDAY BEST........Who remembers how Grandma meant what she said? #discipline really has nothing to do with this image. If you get beyond the nostalgia for corporal punishment in our families, youll notice that this is actually a photo of a grandmother mending the seat of that childs pants. She has a needle in her hand, you can see the white thread extending from her hand to his bottom, and her sewing kit is on the floor beside her. Discipline isnt determined by how much you spank a child, but by consistency in your actions and words. The word DISCIPLINE and DISCIPLE are both derived from the Latin word DISCIPLUS. It means learner or one who learns from activity or experience that provides mental or physical training. Its not about punishment in order to enforce obedience. This is one of the values we lost during our bondage in America. It was at the center of our experience in our native cultures prior to the exploitation and twisting of slavery. This was behind the coming of age ceremonies for our young men and women; for which they spent their childhoods in preparation. Sadly, we now have the notion in many of our families that you need to beat the devil out of a child. This is the legacy of the racist assaults on our humanity by the masters of our enslaved ancestors who believed, that whatever vile treatment they inflicted upon our ancestors was for their benefit, because the color of their skin PROVED that they had the Devil inside of them. This is also the meme which allowed for the discarding of our nature based religions, and the substitution of the Roman Slave religion of Christianity. And as we continue this travesty, we maintain and re-instigate the condition called POST TRAUMATIC SLAVE DISORDER.
