Sometimes when expressing your strongly held views by way of Social Media, its always gratifying to review another point of view that seems to lend some credence to your own point of view. Im referring to comments I made in response to the following letter I read a couple of weeks ago in the Orlando Sentinel Newspapers Letters Section This morning, as I perused the Orlando Sentinel over breakfast, what caught my eye was a letter posted in the Letters Section entitled Critics Right about Obama Being Weak, written by someone from next door in Maitland, Florida. The immediate questions in my mind was what critics is this person speaking for, who are they, what is their credibility or even their politics, and who is he, that the Orlando Sentinel would contribute 2-1/2 columns to post his letter. What gives this person the credibility to opine such a letter and why would the Orlando Sentinel just post it without so much as a qualifier. The American journalistic industrial complex is corporate owned, partisan and thereby without much journalistic credibility. My belief is that the publics need is for journalistic, unfettered truths and facts, not opinions from little nobodys. This morning while perusing the Letters Section of the Orlando Sentinel, I came across this letter written by another writer entitled Dont offer platforms for anonymous rants. I could have sworn that the writer was responding to the same letter I responded to a couple of weeks ago. The letter went as follows: What happens if a nasty comment falls in the forrest and theres no one there to read it? Nothing. Precisely why there is no good, sane reason to give a platform where none is due. People who refuse to let facts get in the way of their opinion dont deserve a wide audience. Let them rant in person, where there may may be consequences to their vile remarks. Sad but true, but racism, misogyny, religious intolerance, etc. have all gone underground. And news outlets and Social Media are aiding and abetting in undermining a civil society by allowing the cloak of anonymity. Remember the old God is Watching ? If we dont clean up our act, well all be unfriended. I couldnt have said it better. I always thought Letters to the Editor should be about things like parks & gardens, zoning changes, re-direction of 1-way streets, etc. Not, racist opines by nameless, persons. And, thats just my opinion.
